Gucci Joins Oakley in Offering 3D Glasses

In addition to Oakley, Gucci will also be rolling out 3D eyeglasses to target the high-end consumer electronics shopper. Available in time for the holiday shopping season, Gucci’s 3D eyewear will set you back $225 and features a retro-1980s aviator-inspired design. Though not just stylishly chic, Gucci is also promising some cool technology should you pull your wallet out and make the purchase, including “optically correct 6-base curved lenses with circular polarized technology,” which is good for Real D, and the lenses themselves also “contain a high tech multi-layered mirrored coating which allows the wearer to view themselves in a mirror without distortion. The mirrored coating not only provides a premium look as well as offers superior viewing and contrast enhancement, but also allows over 98 percent of visible light through, therefore not affecting viewing in a cinema environment. An anti-reflective coating has been applied to the back of the lens for additional overall image quality by reducing scattered light, glare and blue light.”

Vudu streams to Boxee Box, PC and Mac

Vudu has just announced that it is coming to the Boxee platform in November, and that’s really cool for many reasons: first of all, it’s a very exciting service addition to the Boxee platform, and the Boxee Box in particular. Secondly, because Boxee also runs on Windows, Ubuntu and Mac, this means that those platforms will get Vudu as well. (PS: we just noticed that the Boxee Box price is at $200 instead of $300 on Amazon).

If you’re not familiar with Vudu, it’s a commercial video-streaming service that has an excellent video-quality. Movies (even in HD) start streaming either right away or after minutes, while other services have you wait for more than 30mn for an HD 1080p movie. Boxee has started as a TV app for computers, but has recently branched into the hardware space with the Boxee Box, powered by D-Link. Boxee (the software) can be downloaded for free.

We’ve been hearing the hushed whispers of an HTC Mecha handset for a few months. Now we’ve got solid evidence of its existence thanks to the HTC’s own HTC Sense web site that lists the Mecha along side the Desire HD and Desire Z when signing up for an account. Unfortunately, the image used for the Mecha (found after the break) appears to be the old Hero handset unless HTC is planning to resurrect that particular industrial design (which we doubt). Now get out of here and hit the source link to try it for yourselves.

[Thanks, Anthony P.]

You’re a dude (or dudette) that likes to be prepared, right? It’s the Boy Scout motto, after all. To that end, we’re surmising that you’re already gearing up for OS X 10.7, and while that new finger exercise regimen will definitely pay off in the long run, Bullet Train’s Express Keyboard Platform is what you’re really in need of. For all intents and purposes, this is a $99 slab of aluminum, precisely crafted to hold an Apple Keyboard and Magic Trackpad. Essentially, the trio creates the bottom portion of a MacBook Pro, albeit with a larger touchpad and a slate of keys that aren’t nearly as dark. The outfit’s charging quite a premium for this thing, but we’re told that demand is through the roof — in other words, if you want one, you should probably jump in line now. But really, are you having that much trouble using both in their own space?

Sennheiser is well known in the slightly more budget-conscious wing of the audiophile community for selling great headsets at prices that won’t drop your credit rating by more than a few points. Of late the company has been making waves in the gaming community as well by throwing microphones onto those cans, and now four new models are shaking the pool even more. First and biggest is the $299 PC 360, available overseas for a few months but finally hitting the US and building upon the success of the PC 350. It looks to borrow the open design of the company’s well regarded HD555 headset, adding a mic on the left that mutes itself when you pivot it up and a volume dial on the right. The $239 PC 333D model offers a similar design but with more isolating closed cups, mixing in pseudo 7.1 Dolby Headphone, while the $169 PC 330 looks much the same minus the faux surround. Finally, and smallest of the bunch, is the $209 PC 163D, which again offers pretends at 7.1 but in a design that might be a little more… flattering for gamers with smallish heads. None is exactly affordable, but all should rock your world, and all are available now.

DIY: Men Of War Gaming Controller

Don’t think that gaming controllers out there are good enough for you to win at the RTS game Men Of War? You could always attempt to build one of your own, which is what a modder out there did, starting off with a DIY controller with 11 buttons, expanding it over time to include a joystick, countdown timers, and a beautifully lit case. Under the hood of this controller are a couple of PIC microcontrollers multiplexing the switches, LEDs and timers. Surprisingly this item interfaces with the computer via a PS/2 port, but as long as it works, right? The build log is pretty detailed, giving you plenty of information in case you plan on coming up with a similar item yourself.

We knew good and well it was coming, and here it is. Microsoft has today introduced the Release Candidate (RC) of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to the public, and for those unaware of how these software rollouts “work,” the RC release generally signals that a final build is just about ready. As previously announced, the only new features added to the SP1 are the Windows Server 2008 R2-related virtualization technologies, Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX, and while Windows 7 SP1 will enable PCs to take advantage of these server-based features to provide a more scalable and richer VDI experience for end users, there are no additional new features specific to Windows 7. If that’s cool with you, there’s a source link (and a download) waiting for you just below.

[Thanks, Logan]

Ben Heck, expert modder and webshow host, is at it again with his newest creation, the Real-Life Portal T-Shirt. By modifying the shirt with “a chest-mounted LCD screen and a back-mounted CCD camera,” Heck created a t-shirt which puts a hole through your belly, right where the cake would have been if it weren’t a lie.

Ben shows off his Portal T-Shirt by showing off some of his previous mods, viewable through his midsection. Check out the video after the jump for a video demonstration of the creation of a Portal tee.

Apple Preparing New Concierge App For Customer Check-ins At Stores

Word is going around that the Apple Store iPhone/iPod touch app will be getting a minor update in the near future, and it’s a rather useful one too. The updated app will include a feature that’s capable of recognizing you when you enter the Apple Store that you have a reservation at, prompting you if you want to confirm your reservation, after which a photo of the Apple employee that will be helping you will be shown, allowing you to quickly zoom in on the help that you’re looking for. With the app, employees will be able to monitor an iQueue showing a list of currently waiting customers and their respective check-in times. Sounds like a great way to help Apple make its shopping experience different from its competitors.
