You might’ve noticed this already, but for those out there who share our lust for Olympus’ E-P1 “digital Pen,” but haven’t done too much digging, consider this a public service announcement. The retro-chich micro four thirds camera is now available for pre-order from a handful of online retailers, with several different packages to choose from based with various body color (silver or white) and lens color (silver or black) combinations. Looks like it’ll still cost you about $750 if you want body only, but really, at this point we don’t know why you wouldn’t pay an additional Ulysses S. Grant and grab a lens with it. Ready to smash that E-P1 piggy bank a bit early? You’ve got plenty of retailers willing to help you out there, but don’t feel too pressured, there’s still a little bit of time to decide before the July launch.

We’re unfortunately light on details here, but The Unwired is reporting that HTC’s Hero has been approved by the Global Certification Forum, listed here as “HERO100,” with support for quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 1800/2100 MHz. With the company’s touted London event just around the corner — this Wednesday, to be exact — we wouldn’t be surprised to see the phone and its oft-rumored “Rosie” Android UI take center stage, in possibly two variations. Other than frequency bands and the associative name, the GCF isn’t giving us anything else to work with, so for now just sit back and hope this uncertainty is cleared up sooner rather than later.

Sick of having to use your inconvenient mouse and keyboard to do “internet searches” for ROMs of your favorite retro games? Well a gentleman named Matthias might just have the answer to your prayers — a USB SNES cartridge adapter. The enterprising DIY’er has created a combo hardware and software solution that allows you to plug in your dusty carts directly to your rig, and see the ROMs appear as standalone files which you can then load into the emulator of your choice. Apparently there are still some kinks to work out (like getting data rates up for larger games), and Matthias already has plans underway for a multi-system solution. Still, this is impressive stuff, even if it means we’ll have to repurchase any titles we’re missing from reputable online auction houses. Hey, at least it’ll cut down our visits to “Russian porn sites.” Check out the video of the whole thing in action after the break.

Now that we know the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre share extremely similar 65nm ARM Cortex A8-based internals, it’s time to break out the stopwatches and see how these blood brothers stack up. Anandtech has the first head-to-head tests we’ve seen, and it seems like the 3G S has the slight edge, loading a series of web pages 11 percent faster and a whopping 54 percent faster than the iPhone 3G. Not too shabby, but not exactly a thorough drubbing either — especially when you consider webOS is still 1.0 and there’s likely some optimizations to come. Full results at the read link.
Update: Anandtech had some uncharacteristically bad math going on — the 3G S is actually 21 percent faster than the Pre, which is actually quite notable considering the similar hardware and WebKit-based browsers.

Taking aim at Microsoft’s recently unveiled Project Natal, Stephen Colbert unveiled a new-new console on The Colbert Report the other night. The XXbox (or Ex-Xbox, one of our readers cleverly pointed out) bests Natal’s lack of controller by at least one point, lacking a console and games. For about 500 bucks, it sounds like a steal. But you know, we’ll buy any new gadget. Video is after the break.

Seagate‘s giving its FreeAgent Go drives a fresh new 640GB capacity ceiling, and while it’s not the first external to cross that 500GB threshold, it’s certainly on the thinner end of the totem pole, physically. Nothing revolutionary here otherwise, it’s still the standard USB-connected with up to 480Mbps transfer with multiple color options. Also distinctly the norm? Not a bit of info on pricing or availability, but if Seagate’s posting promotional materials on its main site, we suspect it’s not too far off.

If you stop to think, really, about how much we take pleasure in seeing pictures of phones get utterly dismembered, it’s quite disturbing. So don’t think about it, and instead hit up the read link for a gallery showcase copious amounts of a prototype Nokia E72 innards, ripped apart alongside an E71 (on the right in the image above) for comparative purposes. There’s a very brief question-and-answer session just after the photos, but it’s definitely not gonna keep you satisfied between now and its third quarter launch window.
