After what must’ve been a few painful minutes of rehearsal, a few robots built by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research have preformed what we assume to be their first and last paid gig: a rendition of Happy Birthday to celebrate the 100th of the Science Museum in the UK. What’s interesting about these bots — outside of their horrible ear for music and laughable singing voices is the fact that they’ve actually been programmed to communicate and teach each other to sing through the process of singing to each other. Videos of both painful acts are after the break, and while we wouldn’t call it art, we shouldn’t throw stones: we’ve been in plenty of garage bands that sounded quite a bit worse.

Designer Rhea Jeong’s Void LP player seems devoid of reality, but it was inspired by the very real and very cute “Vinyl Killer,” a little VW Bus that can propel itself around a record and play the tunes with its tinny speaker, naturally wearing out the precious LP in the process. The Void LP takes the concept of a self-sufficient speaker, amp and needle (the red ball), and then tosses them all into the air with a magnetic saucer. We’re sure it sounds terrible, and it seems a little fantastical, but one thing’s for certain: we want.

Sure, these days, it can be pretty hard to get super-stoked over a casemod… after all, they’re basically a dime a dozen. We’re always impressed with the crazy ones though, and this one — the Edelweiss (possibly named after our least-favorite song and flower) really takes the crazy and turns it up to 11. We’re not even sure what’s going on, to be honest, but we can assure you of this much: we’re really, really fond of it. Two more shots after the break.

Firms like Cradlepoint have been dishing out generic portable hotspots for years now, but it wasn’t until recently that US consumers had a carrier-branded option for creating their own WiFi zone via EV-DO. Novatel’s shockingly diminutive MiFi 2200 portable EV-DO router has officially arrived on both Sprint and Verizon Wireless, and while GSM followers have been unfortunately left out for the moment, we’re still eager to hear how early CDMA adopters are faring. Are you pleased with the convenience factor here? Have you had any odd and unexpected connection issues? Are you kosher with that 5GB limit on monthly throughput? Let us know if you think this thing’s worth its asking price, and if not, what would make it so. And… go!

You know what’d sell like a cold glass of water in hell? A $199.99 BlackBerry Tour on Verizon, that’s what — and it looks like that might be what the carrier’s planning to unleash. Boy Genius Report has what seems to be a promotional graphic advertising the release of the Tour on July 12 — just over two weeks from today — which has the potential to make it the first Tour release anywhere, beating Telus’ July 15 date and Sprint’s nebulous “later this summer” window. Who’s camping out in line with us?

Right after its launch, we noted the sundry problems reported by new iPhone 3GS owners, but this is the first time we’ve heard tell of this specific one… and it seems like a doozy. It’s unclear exactly what caused this, but what is apparent is an unattractive discoloration on the above handset. The user claims it was caused by overheating during a period of using the GPS and 3G of the phone. Either way, it looks pretty crummy now, doesn’t it? What about the rest of you with new, white iPhones? Anything to report? One more shot of this looker after the break.

ZINNET, a company we’ve mostly seen hocking digital converter boxes to old-school broadcast TV owners, has just announced the brite-View line of media devices for digital download fans. We’ll be interested in seeing how these guys stack up against some of the other players out there — in the meantime, peep the gallery below.

Tomorrow is today which makes it time to get your Windows 7 pre-order in. Amazon issued a big ‘ol press release telling us that it’s now offering the Home Premium Upgrade and Professional Upgrade packages for $49.99 and $99.99 though July 11th, while supplies last — nothing special there as it’s the standard pricing you’ll find at all your favorite on-line retailers. Amazon does promise, however, that you’ll “receive the product” when released on October 22nd shops. Note a 3 per customer limit so don’t get greedy, ok? It’s not like Microsoft can just press the OS onto another disc or something.

AT&T's 3G MicroCell still on track for release sometime before the end of the year

We’ve known the tech behind AT&T’s spin on the home-based femtocell repeater since January, and in February a little iPhone update revealed that we were getting closer to prime time. Finally, news of limited trials and then… silence. AT&T has apparently been keeping its head down, diligently testing its MicroCell service, with 200 lucky subscribers having Cisco boxes beam full bars to the darkest corners of their living rooms for months, testing that has been successful enough for AT&T’s Gordon Mansfield to say that it’s still “on track for a full national launch.” That’s the good news. The bad news is that he continued by saying it’ll release sometime “by the end of 2009.” So, you might be in for up to six more months of dangling your iPhone out the window to get your voicemail, but hold tough — you can make it.
