As with Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-GH1, a few lucky folks who have managed to spend a few moments with Pentax’s new 14.6 megapixel K-7 have stopped to host up the results for us to drool over. Early stills are rather impressive, with images being sharp, crisp and generally delightful to stare at. As for video, it’s tough to judge the real quality based on a YouTube rendition, but feel free to glean what you can just after the break. So, if you weren’t sold already, are you now?

Heard any good iPhone 3.0 rumors lately? No? That’s because they’re all here in this tidy little roundup. The latest (pictured above) is a purported top-facing bezel frame for the “Apple iPhone 3Gen 2009.” Besides being black unlike the chrome edge of the iPhone 3G, iLounge and others have noticed a repositioned ear speaker, tucked high against the top-edge that could be making way for a front-facing camera or additional sensor(s). iLounge also created a render (pictured after the break) of a 5th gen iPod nano based on information provided by a source who “has a perfect track record for accuracy.” In addition to a slightly larger screen with 1.5:1 aspect, there’s now a camera on the back; a redesign that dovetails nicely with rumors about Apple to getting serious with integrated video and digital cameras. iLounge also claims that there will be three new models (3G, enhanced 3G, and mainland China version lacking WiFi we suspect) of iPhones with matte plastic bodies less prone to scratching. Importantly, countries will get the phone appropriate to their telco’s capabilities — iLounge says users won’t have to choose between a fast and slow iPhone, they’ll get what their carriers can support. Each will ship in a choice of two capacity options with 32GB being the top-end rumored. Oh, and iPhone 3.0 will also get into the Nike+ game without requiring an adapter (like the iPod touch). These rumors ride a wave of reports that inventories of the iPhone 3G are running low and component makers are now shipping parts for the next generation iPhone. So Steve Jobs or not, we’re still expecting the hardware to be announced at WWDC with possible July 17 launch.

General Motors has just cut the ribbon, metaphorically at least, on the production of the first genuine Chevy Volt integration vehicle. Unlike previous versions, which have been “developments mules” made using parts from the Malibu / Cruze lines, this will look (and hopefully feel) 100 percent like what the company plans to start pimping out this November. The pre-production model will be put through the paces in case the design needs to be refined and tweaked before going full steam ahead. GM is sticking pretty close to its original plan of building at a rate of ten a week by mid-July, with “several hundred more” going into production early next year, and with any luck, it’ll be packing some standardized EV plug by then.

Looks like Chris’ hatred wasn’t totally unfounded. We just got our hands on a Google Ion — which as you can tell is a spitting image of the HTC Magic — complete with 30 days’ worth of T-Mobile service on an included SIM card. It’s not a public release model, but seems fully capable. Yes, it’s got Cupcake, and while the portrait keyboard seems more cramped than the iPhone’s, we found it very comfortable to type in landscape mode. Form factor wise, this thing is as sexy as hardware gets — light, sleek, and thin. The only thing that exceeds our love for it right now is its own love for fingerprints — seriously, the entire body and screen attract them like flies to honey. Colorful similes aside, hit up the gallery below for all the pics you could ask for.

We knew AT&T had an HSPA upgrade in the works, and now the company has announced its plans, with upgrades beginning later this year and reaching completion in 2011. That will overlap only slightly with LTE, which AT&T plans to put into trials in 2010 and start deploying in 2011. The HSPA upgrade takes the network from 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps in theoretical speed, and AT&T also plans to nearly double the amount of wireless spectrum it dedicates to 3G in metropolitan areas — which should come as a relief to city dwellers who haven’t managed more than a couple minutes of sustained conversation since mid-2008. To support the increased bandwidth of HSPA, AT&T also plans on adding thousands of new cell site backhaul connections, while also rolling out 3G service to 20 new metro areas and deploying 2,100 new cell sites in total. HSPA mobile data cards and smartphones will be available “later this year.”

The Viliv S5 has had its fair share of positive reviews, in spite of its not-as-friendly $600 price tag, and now it looks like the company’s ready to up the ante with the S5 Air and S5 Air Ready, according to a report from our friends at Engadget Chinese. From what we gather, both will see an improved, haptic keyboard and support Chinese character input / handwriting input, while the Air Ready also throws in HSDPA to boot. Those in the country can pick one up reportedly in June for an as of yet unknown price, while the rest of us around the world will just have to wait and see if Viliv decides to launch it anywhere else.

We have mixed feelings about the news that Psystar is going under. On the one hand, it’s wonderful having somebody attempt to create powerful, expandable Macs for cheap, on the other hand the company has been generally abrasive to the grassroots hacker community its work is based on, and pretty bombastic when it comes to Apple and “the law.” But hey, everybody needs to make a profit, even companies being sued into oblivion by Apple, and the news of Psystar filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection has interesting legal implications. Not only does it stall Apple’s case against the company — while implying a possibly inevitable defeat — but Apple has long posited that a mystery investor behind Psystar has nefarious aims, and the bankruptcy hearing on June 5th will name the creditors behind the company. Our fingers are crossed for a “Dan Brown”-style conspiracy, but we’re prepared to be “post-2002 Tom Hanks”-style disappointed.
