That Motorola Inferno is looking more real than ever for a couple reasons: first, we’ve been able to confirm it with a trusted source of ours, and two, Boy Genius Report has it on good authority that it’s about to start field trials this coming week. In keeping with the pyrotechnic theme pioneered by the Krave ZN4’s “Blaze” codename, it seems the production device may now be called “Torch” — and, somewhere along the course of its R&D evolution, may have lost the translucent cover. Ironically, we really liked the cover on the ZN4 — the touch sensitivity is one of the more trick features we’ve seen on a handset in recent memory — but, you know, we wouldn’t want to question Moto’s infinite wisdom.

Those obsessives over at Laptop Mag wrangled up a new MSI Wind U120 and did the review thing, and while there’s plenty of good here, the wide availability of similarly specced, strongly designed netbooks throws the Wind’s flaws into sharper relief. With the same internals and battery of the original, and yet oddly less battery life, the main improvement here is the more “professional” chassis design. Not a ton to get excited about, but at least the $379 pricetag has a decent edge on other higher-end (in looks, anyways) laptops of this ilk.

Oh, bollocks! If one particular spokesman who opened up to ZDnet today is accurate, Philips’ totally sweet 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV won’t ever be sold on American soil. Quite frankly, we’re wondering what’s up with Philips and its apparent disdain for the US market. It farmed out its Blu-ray / DVD and TV operations in North America to Funai, it didn’t even bother showing up in Vegas for CES, and anything even remotely swank that it produces seems to be reserved for those overseas. What happened to the worldwide love, Philips? Did someone give you the impression that Yanks wouldn’t buy one of these completely mesmerizing new panels? Sigh.

Pardon us while we gush profusely, but this is easily one of the most amazing audio products we’ve ever had the pleasure of laying eyes on. The Speak-er, which honestly looks like something straight from the labs of Art Lebedev Studios, is quite simply a speech bubble-shaped speaker. It measures in at 4- x 6- x 2-inches and is constructed from polished white ABS with a matte black steel grille. We don’t even know what kind of driver resides within, but we don’t care. All we know is that this amazing piece of art will be on sale later this year for $120 per pair, and we can’t wait to hear the words “now shipping.”

You may have heard about that absolutely giant (1,474 megapixel) photo taken of the Inauguration using a Canon G10 and a GigaPan Imager. Well, today the company’s launched the GigaPan Epic for commercial sale. It works with most point-and-shoots, and composes a single photograph from 220 shots. A robotic mount attached to the camera automates the process of taking all of those images, so you don’t need to worry about missing any of the details. The GigaPan Epic is available now for $379, and a GigaPan Epic 100 for larger point-and-shoot models is expected “soon.” Full PR after the break.

Now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag on Western Digital’s 2TB Caviar Green HDD, hardware fanatics have had a chance to take the 3.5-inch drive for a spin. While its performance leaves something to be desired — transferring files took longer than the 1TB Caviar Black or 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda — instead we’ve got low heat and noise. Of course, the biggest boon is a ginormous storage capacity for just three Benjamins, the same price as some 128GB SSDs. Solid state be damned, rotating disks aren’t going away anytime soon.

We’ve had ample discussion on laptops catering to this and that, but what about the hordes of individuals who just need a perfectly capable, perfectly average machine to get work done with? We’ll let Karl spell it out:
“I need a new laptop, mainly for browsing, programming, AutoCad, and a bit of low-stress gaming. I’ve been checking out options from HP and ASUS, but everything just starts to run together after awhile. I’m looking to spend between $500 and $1,000, and it just simply needs to work. Any opinions?”

Damn, it hasn’t even been a month since Apple’s final Macworld Expo appearance, and it already looks like the show’s in trouble — the CEA just announced that its iPod / iPhone-centric iLounge Pavilion sold out just a week after being announced, and that it’s quadrupling in size to include Mac-specific products and retailers as well. That means there’s going to be 18,000 square feet of CES solely dedicated to the Apple ecosystem, and without the draw of an Apple product announcement to bring the press to Macworld, it’s going to be pretty tough for it to attract the top-tier companies and product launches it needs to survive in the face of the CES juggernaut. We’ll see how this plays out — we’ve got a feeling next year’s Macworld is going to be dramatically different.
