Here’s an odd one for you. Tobias Engel of the Chaos Communication Congress has discovered a rather nasty exploit that’ll cause any Nokia S60 devices running versions 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 or 3.1 to stop receiving SMS and MMS messages. The “Curse of Silence,” which has been independently verified by F-Secure, is triggered by sending an SMS that begins with an email address that’s at least 32 characters long. The attacker must also change the protocol identifier to internet electronic mail before sending. Devices with versions 2.8 and 3.1 lock up after 11 such messages and still have some limited receiving capabilities, while 2.6 and 3.0 devices will go completely mum after just one attack. In both cases a factory reset is required to fix it, and he says there is no other known workaround for the user. We don’t imagine this being a pervasive issue, but if you’ve got any tech-savvy enemies or malevolent pranksters in your life, you’ve been warned. Video demonstration is after the break, or hit up the read link to see if your device is among those listed at risk.

SEGA of America has just rolled out PlaySEGA, a new gaming and social networking website that features a whole bunch of free-play titles that is compatible with both PC and Mac users. Each game will enable users to collect PlaySEGA rings - the de facto “currency” on the site which can then be traded to customize the site when creating profile pages. It would be interesting to see how far people would go in wasting their time on casual games so that they can have the most blinged up page. In addition, SEGA will be offering a paid-for VIP section that will make available some MegaDrive classics as well - here’s to hoping Golden Axe and Altered Beast appearing yet again!

We’ve already seen it go down unofficially, but we’ve received word from HTC today that Android’s coveted “Cupcake” branch of updates and fixes — or at least a majority of it — will likely be making it to the G1 in the future as a legitimate over-the-air push. HTC isn’t involved in deciding what updates get pushed to the G1 or when, but given the update cadence so far and the G1’s support for Cupcake’s capabilities, the company believes that it’s just a matter of time before T-Mobile makes it happen. The timing is still a big question — HTC’s more or less out of the loop on the schedule, and it’s up to Google and T-Mobile to figure out how it’s going to play out. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more!

Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu of Tokyo’s Keio University has been working on his Eliica eight-wheeled electric car since 2003, but the Japanese government’s interest in fuel-efficient vehicles has rekindled his efforts, and he’s currently, um… on a roll. The current Eliicas, of which there are currently two, run on lithium-ion batteries and each wheel is driven by a 60 kilowatt engine. The auto’s got a top speed of 230 miles per hour, and Shimizu’s group of engineering students eventually hope to reach 250 miles per hour with new models. The team is currently trying to raise a bunch of money to build 200 of these, which cost somewhere in the realm of $255,000 each. We wish them luck in their endeavors, but can’t imagine Syd Mead’s going to be pleased there’s another futuristic-hearse designer entering the market.

After slowly sneaking its branding onto its Linksys devices, and welcoming us to the non-defined “Human Network” with ubiquitous GE-style feel good advertising (above), Cisco is finally ready to make a real play for our hearts and pocketbooks with a new wireless audio streamer — among other consumer-friendly products — to be unveiled at CES next week. The products so far are vaguely defined, but it seems like a Sonos-type device in the cards, with a video streamer for use with a TV (and that handy Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem) and eventually a TV-based videoconferencing device both in development. The latter would be a full-HD setup, in the vein of the company’s $40k+ Telepresence rooms currently available to corporations and inexplicably rich comic book heroes, but dramatically cheaper of course. Unfortunately, that won’t be available for a year or two, and in the meantime we’ll have yet another vaguely useful media streamer on our hands — we can’t wait!

We love a good hacker vs. hardware battle, and while Microsoft has thus far done a reasonably good job of keeping miscreants from diddling with the details of the Xbox 360’s firmware, applying patches and dropping ban hammers on those who don’t comply, as of this morning it seems to be losing the arms race. Team Jungle has released version 1.5 of its IXtreme firmware, allowing for (relatively) easy cracking and unlocking of Xbox 360 consoles containing LiteOn, BenQ, and Samsung DVD drives (i.e. the majority of them). That leaves only Hitachi owners out in the cold, but if that’s you don’t fret: your version is just a few weeks away. Happy homebrewing!

Relive the glory days of the great ocean going liners, or just pour yourself another drink with the Gin and Titonic ice cube tray. Each tray makes 4 icebergs and 4 Titanics so there’s plenty to go around. Ironically a Titanic made of ice wouldn’t have sunk but I digress. Bombay and tonic thanks barman.Ice [...]
