An interesting wave of MacBook rumors hit today, for some reason, following up on these weird case images we saw a while back. First up, Seth Weintraub at Computerworld says the new machines will be manufactured in an all-new process out of one sheet of aluminum and feature glass multi-touch trackpads — which seems entirely unnecessary, since there’s no reason for the trackpads to be clear if there’s no screen underneath them. (No, there’s not going to be a screen underneath them. Stop it.) Second, AppleInsider says that the inherent suck of Intel’s integrated graphics solutions is pushing Apple away from using the Centrino 2 / Montevina platform in the MacBook, and that the company’s planning on doing its own custom chipset instead. That’d a be big step for Apple, since it’s basically used Intel reference designs ever since it went x86 — but given how useless Intel’s integrated graphics are when really pushed, we can see why Apple’s ready to walk away. Of course, this is all nothing more than rumor and speculation, so we wouldn’t expect any of this to actually come to pass, but hey, it’s fun to dream, right?

IFA’s coming up soon, and that means Fujitsu Siemens will officially unveil the Amilo Mini. Yeah, you’ve already heard about some preliminary specifications and witnessed the unit itself on video, but did you know about the interchangeable lids? In a ploy a siphon away even more cash from netbook buyers, the firm is very, very intelligently looking to offer at least a couple of accessories to distinguish your unit from everyone else’s. It makes sense, really — cute little notebooks deserve cute little trinkets to jazz them up. Pure brilliance, we say. See the lids on video after the break.

Dell Studio Hybrid

If you’ve been paying attention, you remember all those blurry-vision pictures of an upcoming Dell mini desktop called the Studio Hybrid. As it turns out, those spy images were more than speculation, as an anonymous reader tipped us off to one of Dell’s internal customer service session pages that guides the rep through some wireless keyboard and mouse resynchronization steps. The Dell Studio Hybrid appears to be codenamed “Nausicaa” (if image filenames are to be believed) will come with a wireless mouse and keyboard powered by AA batteries, and it seems Dell believes that customers will need some help setting up these potentially finicky perpipherals. As for when this new mini-desktop will be available, we’re still in the dark on that, but a back-to-school number this like wouldn’t be such a bad idea. We’re not sure how long the page will remain up once our readers have poked at it, but we captured the images in a handy gallery for that inevitable moment.

So we waffled on whether to go with a sad Moto or happy Moto face, but as we’ve stated in the past, we suppose we’ll keep on keepin’ on with the former until something marvelous happens. Nearly four months to the day after Motorola split in two, along comes word that the separated home and networks division will now be segmented into three distinct units: broadband home solutions, broadband access solutions and cellular networks. According to a statement put out by the firm, the “organizational change will ensure that home and networks mobility remains agile, focused and ideally aligned to realize its growth potential,” which is about as canned a statement as you could ever hope for. We’ve heard that three’s company, but who knows how it’ll play out here.

Based on the Associated Press’ selection of file photos, it seems like New Jersey State Assemblyman Neil Cohen likes doing stuff with puppies. Apparently, the 57 year-old Democrat might also might like doing stuff with children. Cohen was busted on Wednesday for having child pornography on his office computer. Now, his former colleagues are pushing to install filters that would block porn from all state computers. Got to love those reactionary politicians. Jersey’s anti-porn crusaders have their work cut out for them though. A study conducted last year by PixAlert found that 25% of all office computers have porn stashed on their hard drives and that “people are going through extraordinary lengths to bypass security systems in order to receive and distribute inappropriate material.” You may be able to bypass porn filters, but is watching xTube really worth losing your job? Garden State porn lovers should probably take some advice from famous Jersey resident Tony Soprano who once said “Log off, that ‘cookies’ shit makes me nervous!” For state employees seeking fodder for workday wanking, I suggest staying offline and picking up a nice plastic-wrapped three pack of porno mags.

Little known tidbit for those not keenly watching the happenings at Infineon: the firm was forced to write down the value of its Qimonda stake by €1 billion ($1.57 billion) in April. Not surprisingly, Infineon’s head honcho is about ready to rid the company of the flagging unit, making quite a few direct statements in a Germany daily saying as much. For starters, CEO Peter Bauer stated that “a complete sale is possible as is a sale of a minority stake,” and he continued by affirming that it was already “speaking to financial investors and other companies in the industry.” Just in case you had any doubts whatsoever that this cat was serious, he proclaimed that “[the firm] was working with utmost urgency on the question how to close the chapter on Qimonda as quickly as possible.” Unrequited love at its finest.

Not that Samsung is actually looking to pump this out into beauty salons worldwide, but there stands at least a mild chance that sophisticated females shopping for new compacts would also spring for some storage. Joongoo Lee’s Costume is a sleek, deliberately styled 2.5-inch external hard drive that looks entirely at home mixed in with various makeup components. Additionally, the bundled dock is equally sexy, though we can only hope there’s a USB 2.0 port somewhere on this thing. Though this is just a concept, we wouldn’t put it past Samsung to turn into a reality — after all, it did just produce pink and blue BlackJack IIs. Your soft side is showing, Sammy.

We’ve been seeing in the wild shots of E-Lead’s Noahpad for months on end, but on some fateful trunk lid likely to be halfway across the planet, this undeniably peculiar UMPC has finally arrived to an end user. Oddly enough, said user couldn’t even wait to get the thing inside, and as you can clearly above, this unboxing took place entirely on the trunk of a car. We can’t determine what’s more interesting here — the unit itself, or the totally cute Baby In Car sticker just up there on the right.

Hold onto your dollar bills, y’all — the WhiteKnightTwo is set to be unveiled (and swooned over) on Monday. We knew the fabled space tourism vehicle was set to be unwrapped this month, but knowing that said event is merely hours away just gets our juices flowin’. Richard Branson and “other dignitaries” are preparing to officially launch the ship at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California (a short drive from Zzyzx, we hear), and we’re still being led to believe that test flights should begin as early as this fall. Hey, at least you know what you’re doing next year if your ship comes in.

So yeah, quite a few NVIDIA GPUs have been acting up. Nothing new there. However, Dell’s attempting to help its laptop owners out by making a few notable BIOS updates readily available for download. Apparently the issue “is a weak die / packaging material set, which may fail with GPU temperature fluctuations.” In order to combat the problem, Dell’s BIOS flashes “modify the fan profile to help regulate GPU temperature fluctuations,” though the Round Rock powerhouse only promises that the updates will “help reduce the likelihood of GPU issues.” Hit the read link and give it a go — it can’t hurt… we hope.
